Uncomparable. Someone wished me to listen to a new tenor singing this earlier today. He was a nice singer but, once you've heard a voice produced with such skill, demonstrating such a mastery of his instrument with complete understanding of the expressive phraseology of the music and language, you simply cannot hear anything finer than the genius of Jonas Kaufmann.

Bravissima. Vaness ALWAYS sang well.

This must have been a delight to Strauss and to all sopranos who worked with him, especially in the role of Zerbinetta, who tries to return the despondent Ariadne to the land of the living. What a genius! How miraculous it must have been to be a soprano, singing roles he had written.

Umm no Netrebko...this piece is suppose to be sung by a light voice... not by a grandma soprano past her prime

I agree totally that her voice is one of those that doesn't record as well, you really have to see her LIVE. The smaller, more even voices record better. There IS a tendency for her singing to sound under pitch but I think it's because the voice has so much dark color from underneath, so many overtones. There's times where it does truly go flat but look this is a real singer. Unlike the clown Angela Meade. This is a true dramatic actress.

I didn't know he ever played this role; I'd heard he disliked playing the Pinkerton character.

Wow! That is so brilliant. What a gorgeous voice. There is hardly anything available of Jonas Kaufmann's Pinkerton so it's really wonderful to find this. It sounds like he was perfect in the role. Mind you, it just illustrates JK's absolute professionalism and genius interpretation, as I can't think of anyone less like Pinkerton than he is.

The beauty and top class quality of Jonas Kaufmann's voice in this aria really does speak for itself. I have not heard any other performance of it that comes as close to perfection as this one does. Bravo Jonas.

It's as impressive a baritone voice, as one will ever hear, folks, but don't you find, it's use, a tad invariant, unsubtle, & monotonous? He could get by with the same attack to everything he did, because such a huge, resonate sound always predominated, & projected to the furthest reaches of the opera house, & audiences were grateful for that, even people who were less enchanted by his recordings. So that's what Robert Merrill settled for, rather than the hard work, which would have made him a more interesting interpreter of his roles, or at least as interesting, as his equally big voiced Met colleague, Leonard Warren.
